Left Austin near 12:30. Took Hwy 183 north toward Cisco and I20. Tornado warnings were in effect at this time for the area just north. Continued on up 183 to near Gunsight. This photo is of one of the many wallclouds, lowerings, and funnels in this area. Lots of lightning in the north area. Broke east on hwy 112 to Ranger then south to I20 and into the town of Eastland. A large rain core dumped and large hail appeared imminent. Reached hwy 6 south just in time to avoid the worst. |
I didn’t like the unorganized somewhat ‘squally’ look of the northern area near the warm front so I decided to go after a cell further south along the dryline which was alone on radar. On the way radar indicated a ‘TVS’ and a Tornado Warning was issued. We later learn a DPS Trooper reported seeing a tornado at this time. I forget the exact position of the following images, but it was near the town of Echo off a very small back ‘dirt’ road. This shot shows the supercell structure to the west, and it’s wallcloud. |
In position on the dirt road looking mostly east. A couple of tornado warnings are in progress for this cell. |
The wall as it gets closer. You can begin to see a couple of inflow features on the right side of the wall. |
More shots of the wallcloud. You can see the Beaver Tail forming and the small clouds are visibly moving into the inflow area. |
After waiting patiently we are rewarded by a small funnel developing under the wallcloud. |
The funnel extends further but never reaches the ground. |
(Left) After driving through Brownwood with a tornado warning in effect for the town, we break southeast on hwy 84/183 with a ragged wallcloud trailing us. There are numerous mesos showing on radar here, just south of town, and also to the northeast of town. We continue to follow on up to Comanche county until after dark. |
